Beautiful, But Is It Practical? What to Know Before Buying a Glass Ball Chandelier

by dfhlighting@gmail.comLyra 18 Aug 2026

A glass ball chandelier can look spectacular in photos.
But before spending several thousand dollars on one, most homeowners have more practical questions:
Is it too heavy? Is it difficult to clean? Will it actually provide enough light?
Those questions matter even more with a chandelier like the Pearl Crystal Glass Ball Chandelier, which ranges from 22" to an impressive 60" in diameter.

1. Yes, the Weight Matters

This is probably the first thing to check.
The Pearl weighs approximately:

  • 22": 78 lbs.
  • 38": 196 lbs.
  • 48": 283 lbs.
  • 60": 330 lbs.

Each individual glass drop weighs about 4 lbs.
So this is not a fixture to install on a standard ceiling box without checking the structure first.
For larger sizes, professional installation and proper ceiling reinforcement should be planned before the chandelier arrives, not afterward.

2. What About Brightness?

Another common concern with decorative chandeliers is whether they are mostly beautiful—or actually useful.
Depending on the size, the Pearl uses 12, 27, 37, or 49 E12 bulbs.
That gives homeowners much more flexibility than a decorative fixture with only a few bulbs.
For dining rooms and living spaces, pairing it with dimmable E12 bulbs can be especially useful: brighter when needed, softer during dinner or entertaining.

3. Is Cleaning All That Glass a Nightmare?

This is one of the most understandable concerns.
Glass-ball chandeliers naturally collect dust, and cleaning discussions around similar fixtures frequently focus on whether individual glass pieces can be wiped or removed for deeper cleaning.
For the Pearl, Franing recommends wiping the surface with a soft, dry cloth and avoiding abrasive cleaners.
The practical answer is simple:
It requires more maintenance than a basic pendant—but probably less often than you think.
Regular light dusting is much easier than waiting until every glass ball needs a deep clean.

4. Can It Work With an Unusual Ceiling?

The Pearl chandelier also offers flexibility for homes with higher ceilings.
The standard maximum hanging height is approximately 81 inches, and longer suspension lengths can be customized when needed.
That makes it easier to adapt the chandelier for vaulted ceilings, tall foyers, stairwells, or other open-height spaces without forcing homeowners into a fixed hanging length.
That makes it useful not only for standard dining rooms, but also for:

  • vaulted ceilings
  • tall foyers
  • stairwells
  • open two-story spaces

So, Is It Practical?

A chandelier like this isn't meant to be the lowest-maintenance fixture in the house.
And that probably isn't why someone is considering it.
The more useful question is whether the extra installation and occasional cleaning are worth the visual impact.
For homeowners who want a chandelier to become one of the defining features of the room, the answer may very well be yes.
